OpenTri

Well, the past 4 weeks seem to have flown by. I have not been able to run since the middle of week 1 of the competitive season. I have been logging my workouts on Trainingpeaks.com. Looking back at week 3 I only managed to get in 11:15 of the recommended 14:45. I did have some strong swims and a long ride of 85 miles on Sunday but overall it was not a great week of training. The weather in Michigan has been very cold and rainy. I tried to do an open water swim in Torch Lake but even with a wetsuit it was too cold. The water temp is in the upper 50's. Every time I put my face down in the water it was just breath taking. The achilles continues to be a problem.

Week 4 was exciting because I finally picked up my new Cervelo P2. I had ordered it 3 months ago and it finally arrived. I went in for the final fitting on Wednesday. I took the bike up to the cottage on the weekend and did 42.5 on Sat and 85 miles on Sunday. The new seat is causing a little pain and the new aero position took some getting used to but my ave. speed improved by close to 1 mph for the 85 mile ride compared to a week earlier on my old bike. I also added an aero helmet as well. I did have some good swims this week but still not able to run at all. I continue to walk after the long ride to at least get my legs used to moving after a long ride. I don't know if this will help or not. Overall I trained for 13:00 of the recommended 15:15.

Week 5 was a nice recovery week. I continue to have some good swims and rides but still not able to run. Long ride on Sunday was the best yet w 85 miles @ 21.3 mph. Still walking after the rides. Achilles is feeling better but will give it one more week off. 10:30 of 12:00 training this week. Weather continues to be cold and rainy. I am worried that I will not get enough training for the Louisville heat and humidity.

Week 6 I was on vacation and we stayed up at the cottage for the week. We had company for 3 of the days. The weather was terrible with rain and cold temps all week. The good news is that the biking continues to improve and I was able to start running on Wednesday of this week! I had almost exactly 5 weeks off from running. The achilles is still a little sore but is tolerable. It hurts for about the first mile and then the pain seems to just go away. I am surprised at how well the running is going. I did my first century ride this week followed by a 7 mile run. The next day I was able to do the "bike sandwich" with an 11 mile run, 1 hour of spinning, and then a 6 mile run. I am amazed that I was able to run so well. I also did my first open water swim this week. It was the first time the water was warm enough. I swam about 1 mile and felt very good. Overall I had 16 of the recommended 17 hours of training.

Right now everything seems to be going along very well. I am amazed at how the time has gone by. I can't believe it is only 8 weeks until the race. I think the family is used to the trainig now too. We seem to have found a nice balance with the training and family time.

Until next time,
Steve
