Wayne Kurtz Background of Ultra Distance Triathlons - Going Beyond the Ironman

I have been competing in triathlons for 24 years with a focus over the last 5 years toward Ultra-Distance triathlons. I have competed in several Double Ultra competitions and last year completed the Quintuple Ironman (5 Ironmans continuous). This year’s focus is the DECA Triathlon (10 full triathlons – 1 per day for 10 straight days) in Monterrey Mexico. History: The first Double Triathlon competition (4.8 miles swimming, 224 miles biking, 52.4 miles running) was held in Huntsville, Alabama in… Continue

mel Gallardo Iron man Canada 2010

Hello everyone, I am a new member. I live in Ajax, Ontario ( 40 min. east of Toronto, Ontario). I recently did my first 1/2 ironman ( Ironman Muskoka). It was fantastic, but before that, I registered to compete in the 2010 IM Canada. I know this is an entirely different monster. From what I hear, IM CDA has two legendary climbs, plus the competition is intense, since it is one of the last full ironman competitions where you can qualify for Kona. I would like to know if anyone knows good mount… Continue

Chuck Graziano Ending the Season on a High Note

Yesterday, I did my 200th triathlon at Westchester. The Westchester Triathlon was also my 1st ever triathlon on August 17, 1986, when it was a sprint distance race from Rye Playland to White Plains High School. In 1986, my training log says that it was a cool and cloudy day. Yesterday...well it was cloudy for sure, and raining steadily all day. Still, the temperature wasn't so bad so I never felt cold. My result was pretty descent; 5th A/G finish in a pretty competitive group (my last year in th… Continue

Jim O'Connor Augusta Half Ironman

Did my first Half Ironman this past weekend...the inaugural Augusta ESI Ironman 70.3...what a great event...loved every minute of it...but the run did hurt after about 5 miles...but a great course...swim, bike, run courses all excellent. I recommend it for next year to anyone. Continue

thomas / golfpro67 MarshMan Sprint

Last Sunday I finished a Sprint. 400yds Swim/ 12.5 Bike / 2 mile run. I did not trained like I did for the Half Iron- but I have been running, biking, and swimming off and on for the last few months. Nothing hard but enough to do the Sprint. My goal was to be in the top 50 and finish at 1hr5min After the race I learned a couple of things about the areas of improvement. In the swim, I never found my rhythm nor a good comfortable pace. It is never the same when you train indoor and then you hit t… Continue

Joseph W Farr Old Boy's Brew House Marathon

Well I just finished the Old Boy's Brew House marathon and did not make my Boston Qual time but maybe next time. It was a very challenging course "lots and lots and lots and lots of hills", finished with 3:30:08 time not to bad but I know that I can be faster. I will be helping train one of my friends for IM Wisconsin 2010, he just finished doing IM Wisconsin 2009 and had some funky things going on with his stomach and sodium levels and did not do as well as he would have liked, so we will be st… Continue

Chris RE-starting yet again.

Man, I can't believe this season has almost passed. I had a rough time of it this year and have had to sit down and re-consider what the heck am I doing ?? So I am re-starting...a year older and 35lbs heavier. I am determined to realized "MY" goals and not the goals that I let myself get pushed into. I need to remember that I do this to make my life better and to be a nicer more calm healthy Wife and Mom. I will start with the Ultra Distance Plan, on Mon. And my main goal is the Triple T and to… Continue

Steven T. McLean Ironman Louisville - Race Weekend

Race weekend has finally arrived. I have been preparing for this weekend for the past nine months. I normally work night shifts in the emergency department but the week leading up to the race I was able to switch my shifts so that I was working day shifts. I wanted to give my body a full week to feel like a day person. I finished the day shift on Thursday and spent the rest of the day nervously packing for the weekend. I did do a short swim today as well. We ended up staying out later than plann… Continue

Alex Dayton End of my Tri Season

This past weekend was my last scheduled triathlon for `09. I have competed all season as a member of the USAT-SE Junior team, and it's been awesome. Sunday morning was the Fall Creek Falls Triathlon - my first olympic distance triathlon. I placed 1st in the 16-19 age group, in a time of 2:21.35, and 12th overall out of 280. My split were: 21:41, 1:09.41, and 45:08. It was a fairly hilly bike and run course, so I was happy with those times.....will improve upon them next year. Things I've learned… Continue

Darcy Emehiser First Ironman

I am currently trying to figure out a training program. I think I am going to use the 36 week training program from Trifuel.com but I can't figure out how to fit in weight lifting. Anyone have any ideas?? Well gotta go to the gym, maybe something will come to me as I sweat!!! Continue

Bjarke Thor Iversen My first training session

Hi. Not sure if anyone is reading this, and really dont care... Just wanted to post this into the void that is the internet to get it out of me: I JUST "RAN" FOR 45 MIN. TODAY WITHOUT EVER EXCEEDING 70% HR!! Trickiest training session I have ever had. Running and staying below 70% was difficult, but staying below 65% was damn near impossible! The next couple of weeks, that I will be using to adapt to my training schedule will surely challenge my patience... Continue

Jamie Lau Vineman FINISHER!

I finished my first Full Iron Distance Race on Saturday in 13:07. It was about 40 minutes slower than I thought I would be able to go, but I couldn't be happier! My main goal was to stay strong throughout the day, and I did. I actually felt stronger as the day went on, and my last loop of the 3 loop Marathon was my fastest of the day! I PR'd the swim, and was on goal pace on the bike until I had to repair a puncture. Overall I would say it was a great success, and thanks to Mike for the progr… Continue

Sam Horowitz Week of July 20-26

This week was a little anti-climactic. I was hoping to have one last week of hard training before Wilkes Barre, my first Olympic distance race of the season, but I am still struggling with a few nagging injuries. Between some serious calf issues that have been holding me back all season and the shoulder issues that have flared up recently, I ended up missing my swim workouts and cutting a run workout short. Overall, I still feel… Continue

Mark Dabrowski IMLP training the 2nd Time Around, not quite as planned.

What a difference a year makes. Last year I barely missed a workout, was ready for the taper and knew I had prepared to the best of my ability. The race was uneventful (sans the rain) and I finished almost exactly where my training paces dictated, 12:28. This year I have been hampered by an inflammed achilles since late April. My running has been off and on, and almost always uncomfortable. It wasn't so much the running (though slower) as it was the recovery. I just haven't been able to put in… Continue

Sam Horowitz Randolph Triathlon!

I raced the Randolph Triathlon this weekend, and as usual, the event was terrific. Paramount Adventure does a really nice job setting it up and getting everything organized. The course is great and while there's some stiff competition, it still feels like the local race that it is. I had a great race and felt strong the whole way through. The swim course is a big clockwise rectangle in Randolph Lake. I matched my time from last year and felt good getting out of the water. The bike course isn't… Continue

John Broderick Ironman Dreams

In just 2 short weeks, i'll be getting ready for bed in lake placid NY. my bike will be racked already, my gear bags and transition bags will be packed. i'll be anxious and excited and nervous. i'll know i should go to sleep, but my body and mind will fight it. even if i sleep, i will be having ironman dreams. my training this time around has me prepared for a great race. i have really cut back on swimming of late. this is for no good reason. but my form is good, and i've done several long ope… Continue

Steven T. McLean Competitive Season Week 3-6

Well, the past 4 weeks seem to have flown by. I have not been able to run since the middle of week 1 of the competitive season. I have been logging my workouts on Trainingpeaks.com. Looking back at week 3 I only managed to get in 11:15 of the recommended 14:45. I did have some strong swims and a long ride of 85 miles on Sunday but overall it was not a great week of training. The weather in Michigan has been very cold and rainy. I tried to do an open water swim in Torch Lake but even with a wetsu… Continue

Barbara Reuven I did the Pancake!!!!!

I am just happy to report that I did Patanella's "Flat as a Pancake" sprint Tri on 6/27 and I finished. (After 1 year recovery from a horrible bike acciedent) I was not the 1st in my age group, but I am proud to say I wasn't the last. I felt like wearing a t-shirt that said..."I may be slow, but I'm not dead!". I just want to thank all my Greenbrook racing friends for supporting me through this year and encouraging me to return back to multi-sport. See, anything is possible. Continue

Sam Horowitz Week of June 15-21 (WYCKOFF!!!)

Congrats to everybody that did the Wyckoff race. As usual, there was some stiff competition out there. The weather was kind to us on Saturday and we had a great morning to race. My goal for the race was to crack the top 30 so I could race with the elites next year. I had a strong swim, I got a little faster on the bike, and dropped a full two minutes off my run from two years ago. I finished in 1:37:18, which was good enough for 19th overall and 5th in my age group. I was very pleased with my r… Continue
