As for where to jump in, just count back the number of weeks from your key race & go from there...should work just fine.

Sorry to hear about your back (are you seeing anyone who uses ART for muscle injuries?)...for the Half IM distance, I would recommend following the Ultra Distance plan during the weekdays & the International Distance plan during the week...
Last year I used the Ultra Distance Training plan with great success for my first IM. I also took over 30 minutes off my best time at the Half IM distance along the way.
This year I completed a Half IM in early May and settled for a slower time b...
45, biology teacher, 5 years of tri experience including 4 Half-Iron distance events and 1 IM. Came into the sport new to swimming and cycling, and with a LITTLE experience running. Lots of basketball experience, but that ain't quite endurance!
Just achieved my first podium finish in a sprint triathlon with a second place finish at a very tough course. I might not be as fast, but dang if the endurance work did not clinch this for me.
