Ironman Dreams

In just 2 short weeks, i'll be getting ready for bed in lake placid NY. my bike will be racked already, my gear bags and transition bags will be packed. i'll be anxious and excited and nervous. i'll know i should go to sleep, but my body and mind will fight it.

my training this time around has me prepared for a great race. i have really cut back on swimming of late. this is for no good reason. but my form is good, and i've done several long ope… Continue

Lake Placid Training Weekend

Had a fantastic training weekend up in Lake Placid. We went up on friday, and got in an hour swim in the afternoon. The underwater lines have been moved, set up now for rowing i think. swimming the loop felt long, and my time was longer than anticipated, so i'm not sure if it was truly just a 1.2 mile loop. but it's so nice swimming in that lake it really doesn't matter!

saturday we got out on the bikes. i did this same training weekend in 2007. that year, riding the course (112 miles) took me… Continue

Longest Training Yet!

I am truly enjoying this monday morning of REST. and i'm amazed that i'm not sore and not tired. but it is incredible what your body adapts to, how it gets used to the exercise. you really begin to see with ironman training that your body IS a machine, and that you are capable of things that you never thought possible.

this saturday, i left the house at 6:20am on the bike. rode to wyckoff for a steady/fast group ride around the tri course, got a good paceline with rob/tim/george going and that… Continue

2 Months till Lake Placid!!!

I knew that time would go by quickly. But can it really be only 2 months till the race??

Trainings going very well, with the occasional hiccups that life throws in. Overall, I've made great progress in the last 7 months, and am doing much better that training 2 years ago.

I had a 6-8 week period of just lacking motivation to swim. i would miss a swim workout, or 2, every week, and usually had to cut whatever i was doing short because i got there late and had to get to work. But even with that,… Continue

Less than 3 Months to Lake Placid!

So, after a long, cold, dark, dreary, drizzly, snowy, cold winter, i think we were all surprised just how hot it was this weekend! Too hot in fact. No time to adjust!! Warm weather is here!

Since November I've been steadily following the program, through ups and downs. Swimming laps. Running with a quick turnover. Single leg drills and high cadence cycling. Heart rate zones, strokes per length, warmups and cooldowns. Variable Gearing drills, Loco swims, strides, tempos, and LSD. (not the drug!)… Continue

John,
Surgery was okay. Going to ART two times a week. I am IM training too... with Canada just 3 months away. I have a lot of work to do! I figure I will just do my best. I am just starting to ride. I did 50 yesterday. I imagine I am too slow to do a group thing right now. I need to get some miles under my belt. I am taking extra time off work every week to include more biking. Glad your training is going well. Hey, there are bears everywhere up here... it is nutz! Heather

John - Just a heads up. I'm planning a Century next Saturday, 6/30. Leaving Toga Nyack (9W) around 8 am. Heading north to Bear Mtn then on to Newburgh/Beacon Bridge back to Bear (that's about 30 miles) then return to Toga via Closter, NJ.

May have some company from Toga, may not. Just thought I throw it out there as it's nice to mix the training up. Maybe we could meet at Bear Mtn and you do the 30 w/ me? happy to give more details as things come togehter next week.

Have agreat weekend

Perp & endurolytes on long workouts only (3+ hrs). I can tolerate Gatorade, gels and water for the shorter stuff.

Have a great weekend!

Gels w/ water, not Perp. I use a flask so it's prolly a little less than 2 gels/hr. Come to think of it I usually don't drink the whole bottle in 3 hrs. I'm not very scientific w/ this stuff ;) Yes, I sip water constanly from my aerobottle.

Enduralytes, another Hammer product. There is some debate (like w/ salt) if it actually porvides any benefit. But Perp doesn't contain ANY. Most get enduralytes from Gaterade but since I don't drink it I add it to to the Perp. It certainly doesn't enhance the flavor but I don't mind it. They don't have any adverse effect on me so I continue to use them.

The run - I hear you loud and clear! Unfortunately at a race like Harriman, you've got to batttle the deamons in solitutde. We won't have that at LP!

Keep up the good work and train smart!

As you know, Harriman is some wicked tough training ground even moreso of a race venue. 3:29 bike is very good there, in fact it's what I did last year. But it takes it out of you for that tough run. Don't sweat the run, it's now money in the bank and you're well positioned for IMLP.

As to nutrition, we are very similar. I do 6 scoops of Perp for 3hrs and add in 6 endurolytes. Every 15 minutes I alternate between that and gels ( I use hammer or carb boom (hate GU and powergel). No solids, as they have proven to give me GI issues. Run - gels and water and I'll alternate with sips of gaterade. IM I went to coke for last 13 miles.

The only thing I'd add is I think b'fast 2-3 hours before is crucial. For me PB w/ honey on a bagel. All, including b'fast is practiced during the long weekend sessions. You've got plenty of time to iron out the kinks. PRACTICE IT!
Good luck.

Yup, I got in some good training this weekend for the first time in about 8 weeks! I have to be really careful with my calf though since it's still not 100%, but it feels great to be able to train again. Great job on your brick on Sat and run yesterday! The 63 mile group ride sounds good for May 23, I'll have to check the calendar but I might be able to make it. I'm am trying to build up gradually so Easy B pace sounds good to me.

No, hectic day tomorrow. My wife has granted me a Mother's day reprieve so I'm gonna get a long one in on Sunday morning.

Still nursing this Achilles. Harriman may turn into a swim/bike for me. I've got tp keep my eye on the prize and don't want to risk furhter injury, Game day decsion, I'll see what this week brings.

Sorry I missed you then. I was actually hanging out w/ Gephardt and the womens winner (who happens to be my son's teacher) afterwards. Hell, if I can't be fast I might as well hang out w/ fast people ;)

Harriman will be alot easier to meet. When are you going to LP for training? I'm going 6/19-21

Guess you did'nt make it to the Hook? I dealt with dehydration on my 50 mile ride on saturday. Can't believe heat was an issue this weekend!! Actually more than that, I aggravated my achillies last week and it flared up yesterday. I'd had a good start but jogged in the last three miles in some discomfort. Didn't want to risk a bad injury. Going to back off the running this week to try to let it heel.

How'd the rest of your w/e go?
